Edward's "pulling out the old man card" comment got me to thinking What's the first PC game that you remember playing? Mine was Phantasie (1985). I used to play it in the office, after work, since we didn't have a PC at home, then.
It's difficult for me to separate out all of my early computer experiences by platform. I had a Commodore 128 and later an Amiga 500 followed by an x286 PC and future PCs from then on out. A lot of the games back in the late 80s were available for several of these systems. Some of the first distinctly PC games I can recall playing are Mechwarrior 1 and Sim City in the late 80s.
It's hard to remember which came first, playing Gunship 2000 on my brothers PC (when a game called 2000 was seen as sci-if, to be fair it was grounded in modern tech, so near possible future scenario) or Police Quest on my friend's computer. First strategy game was Dune 2, first 4X was Civ 1. I missed the space 4X genre at first, only played very narrow scoped space strategy games. I did play SMAC when it came out but that's terrestrial sci-if. MOO2 was my first entry for space 4X games as we know them.
Well I first wrote a game to play in the Navy in 1966 for pinochle. My next I wrote for a main fame maybe 1972, Backgammon. I don't remember, if I played any games till the Tandy pc, not sure what they were. First game I bought about that time for my son was maybe Starfleet, though I never played. I played Moo1, when it came out and the Ascendancy.
Interesting question... my first game was a simple version of 'arkanoid'... black & white... in spectrum... ahhh, i'm old !!
I actually can't remember but I played sensible soccer on the Amiga. My first 4x was Civ2.It is interesting how hard it was to play when it was a virgin.I took me a while to figure out what the hell I was doing.Build city walls. We forget it's still a bloody deep game and hard for newbies.
Well, I've just remembered, it was "the ancient art of war", with 5.25 inch floppy discs in my 1st pc... Middle 80's decade I think. With this game I discovered strategy games, and "real" computers (that became my profession later)
If you mean computer game, it was Star Trek on a TRS-80 Model 1 But IBM PC it was Starflight. My father has a PC for his office and I talked him into getting one for home, too (You can bring work home!)
Pong. On a friends Vic 20. My second game was Aztec Challenge, on C64, which I got with the C64 from my loving mother. 1985 I think it was.
Oh man! The Ping Pong! Had that on C64. One of those games I could just sit for hours....no idea why, heh. I have a link to more pong. Not sure what the policy is here on links? Its only to youtube though. Let us play Pong!
