I really dislike those random wandering monsters especially in the beginning of the game where every decision and ship is crucial and you run unfortunately into a space monster which chew up your expensive survey ship or frigate+hero. Is there a possibility to deactivate monsters in the settings?
Why not just set them to few? I can't deal with them early because of the settings I use, so I just lower the frequency and stay cautious with my exploration efforts until some more (decent) ships can be produced. It's a nice compromise.
I cant deal with monsters in the early game either, even so in most of my games monsters have been set to high... Essentially you have to send civilian ships with at least one military escort to any unexplored system, and if theres a monster Flee Immediatly (theres a button for it), this usually works for me without any loss... I like having a lot of monsters because when I'm ready I can go round them and gain a lot of exerience for my ship leaders, it also seems to offer some degree of passive protection/deterant against alien interventions in the early game.
To each his own my metal clad friend. I should have been more specific though. In games where research is 10%-20% of normal, and production at 75%...I'm not the only one that has a hard time with monsters early, the AIs tend to fare even worse, (regardless of the extra tech they start with and the bonus I give them). Numerous times I've observed them (AI Factions) get completely thrown off track by Monsters hitting their worlds early on. It was evident by seeing their colonies blockaded by the playful critters for a great many turns.
